The doctor could not refuse to go into a plague-stricken home or neighborhood.Ĭharles de Lorme, a 17th century French physician, is often credited with the design of the plague doctor’s uniform. This meant that the doctor had to treat even the poorest patients, who wouldn’t have been able to pay on their own. Did plague doctors get paid?Ī plague doctor’s salary was not very high, but it did include room and board, as well as expenses. Bubonic plague still occurs throughout the world and in the US, with cases in Africa, Asia, South America and the western areas of North America. There have been other episodes of bubonic plague in world history apart from the Black Death years (1346-1353). The linen hood was used to cover the doctor’s face, and the outer over-clothing garment was used to protect the doctor’s clothing from becoming contaminated. The gloves, boots, and wide-brimmed hat also helped to keep the doctor from coming into contact with the plague. The beak mask was filled with sweet or strong-smelling substances, which were believed to protect the doctor from the disease. The plague doctor’s costume was designed to protect them from becoming infected with the plague. Canes were also used to keep people away and to remove clothing from plague victims without having to touch them. Wooden canes were used in the past to point out areas needing attention and to examine patients without touching them. Their masks and outfits may have been scary, but they were just trying to do their job. They were doctors who were trying to help people during a very difficult time. Mint, roses, and carnations were some of the most commonly used herbs and flowers. Any air that had an unpleasant odor was suspect, and so doctors would put herbs and flowers in the beak of their masks in an attempt to counteract the bad air. The belief that the plague was spread by bad air was widely held during the time of the Black Death. However, there is no evidence that the masks were effective in preventing the spread of disease. The theory was that it would isolate the physician and prevent direct contact with the bodies of plague victims. The beak-like mask was actually worn by doctors and physicians as a medical uniform, under the supposition it would have protected them from disease when they visited people infected. In this way, the memes can serve as a way to help people deal with the fear and anxiety surrounding these diseases. However, some of the most popular plague doctor memes typically feature the doctor as a comical or absurd figure, often making light of the deadly seriousness of the Black Death and other plagues. There is no one definitive answer to this question, as the memes featuring plague doctors vary widely in nature and content. Writing this down tells me this problem is STEAM. And nobody can tell me otherwise it's not how it works. If I set steam to download at 10 mb/s and my ISP is throttling steam down to 5 my pc would simply not go above that 5 mb/s limit. If I get 5 mb/s from a server I cant ever get 10 mb/s. It does not or never will kill your entire home network no matter how fast my pc wants to download something. Knowing it is only happening in steam, if my ISP is throttling me down why does my entire home network need a reboot? why does it not simply download untill the limit is reached and stay at that speed? Cause that is what throttling down a connection does. I have not changed ISPs in years and if they throttle down steam, why do they not throttle down origin, epic, blizzard etc. If it all ties down to being throttled down my ISP is not telling me or straight up lying about it. If none of your local configuration or tweaks is doing the job you're going to have to entertain an issue outside of your realm of control. But there's a dozen possibilities for your situation too. I can't say I've ever had issues when using Steam. I've used Steam over a half a dozen ISPs over the last 16 years. So sure, other people are bound to have the same/similar issue. Steam has hundreds of millions of users encompassing nearly every ISP there is. And it wasn't an Azure issue as no one else was reporting outages or packet loss issues. But we didn't have issues with similar data being done through Amazon S3, or anything else. Just like we only had packet loss when connecting to Azure. It could be an ISP issue that just manifests itself when using Steam. And it took days to sort out.Īnd it may not be a Steam issue at all. In the meantime we had to rely on the fallback service. Charter had to figure out what was going on and fix it. We discovered the issue, but we can't make Charter route packets correctly through fiddling on our end. The Charter service worked fine, but when connecting to a certain business critical service (Azure) we'd experience a lot of packet loss which severely affected performance and caused software to fail as requests timed out. If the problem is occurring at some point outside of your modem or system, then nothing you do will have much influence.įor example once upon a time my company was having an issue where we had service through Charter cable, and fallback service through ATT. One thing users seem to have a hard to accepting is when it comes to their internet connections they actually have very little control over it. It's possible they're throttling downloads via Steam or there's some other issue they need to diagnose and sort out. Well one thing you might consider is ISP issues, or even ISP configuration. Severely slowing down steam on purpose to 1 or 2MB/s to download anything is just not a solution in my honest opinion. It can be "restored" by resetting router and modem or rebooting PC. are all similar, steam kills internet connection when downloading a game, or game update. I still see it dropping the steam download rate to zero every now and then. In this case it was an Intel I218-LM ethernet card (On an Lenovo. I was able to isolate the problem to the ethernet card itself (my wifi card was fine, router was fine (on a T1 line so download speeds are. Steam dropping internet connection *Possible Fix* :: Help and. Yet I see this "issue" pop up on google search before covid times. I can't disable any internet sharing protocol in Win 10 cause the LAN adapter does not have that "Tab" I cannot disable a WiFi channel that I don't use. What can I do to fix steam download issue? Other "solutions" I find have you delete steam cache and changing "regions" but this is not a fix. Other "solutions" involve disabling internet sharing on a WiFi connection, but I am using a wired card so I can't find this option. Downloading games of 50 GB will take a lot of time this way. I have to set a download limit of 4 MB/s and if that doesn't keep the connection "alive" I have to go even lower, 2 or 3 MB/s. I have found several "solutions" but these aren't a fix. but when I download in steam my internet connection drops after a few (2 or 3) minutes and I HAVE TO RESET MY MODEM AND ROUTER to get the internet connection back up. I would like to fix this issue.ĭownloading from any website with browser or other game clients like origin, epic, blizzard is not an issue and it goes at max speed most of the time. As title says: when downloading a game in steam it kills my internet connection. These error types lead to different problems that are costly to resolve, can lead to missed issues, and don’t live up to the goal of the moderation policy. flagging something that is not a policy violation). missing something that should be flagged) and false positives (i.e. That often leads to transcript errors which means the text analysis will suffer from a high frequency of false negatives (i.e. Most general purpose automated speech recognition (ASR) solutions will not recognize a significant portion of the game-related nomenclature and slang. Many companies believe that they can just add an off-the-shelf transcription solution to a voice chat and then feed the text into their existing moderation solutions. If a game maker has other communications, such as text chat, they typically have some type of moderation solution to monitor for abusive behavior. Given this situation, game makers are turning to voice chat moderation vs eliminating voice chat from their experiences. The data suggest the case for including voice chat in games is strong and getting stronger. So, voice is really a social element that adds stickiness and retention to your games that you can’t get from something else.”īouris also said that voice chat users spent twice the amount of time playing as non-voice users and were five times more likely to be playing after five weeks. And we also find this holds true for any platform, any game type. “The metrics show that people who use communications during their gaming game more and more often than those that don’t. Tod Bouris, the former director of customer success at Vivox and now a manager at Unity, said at a 2019 conference: You can also see it in user behavior related to voice chat. As Subspace put it in 2021, “Voice deepens the immersive world, helps forge social bonds, and strengthens online play.” As I wrote in an earlier post:Īn Oxford Academic study from 2007 found that “voice chat leads to stronger bonds and deeper empathy than text chat. It’s not just Chinese gamers that like voice chat. When a title doesn’t have an in-game voice communication system in place, 73.7% of these players say they turn to a third-party service instead.” 90.6% of consumers use the built-in voice chat function when playing a game, with 38.4% saying that they use the voice chat function often. “ Over 90% of Chinese gamers prefer to interact with other players in an experience. An article in Hackernoon shared statistics from Tencent Cloud that reported: Gamers like voice chat, and its absence could undermine a game’s competitiveness while shortchanging the in-game experience. But simple solutions aren’t always practical. Some people may suggest that you could avoid this problem altogether by simply sticking to text chat alone or offering no in-game communications. However, our conversations with game makers suggest there is not only room for improvement the existing techniques for voice chat moderation introduce new problems because they are inaccurate, expensive, and slow. Game makers are applying a variety of approaches to combat voice chat abuse. However, they are concerned about the impact that toxic behavior and harassment have on the game-playing experience and how it can lead to players reducing their play session time, use frequency, and avoiding specific game titles altogether. Game makers want to offer voice chat because it is a feature that players enjoy. Whether it is these games, Back 4 Blood, or others, the intent is the same. It is up to the user to select up to a 40-second clip that includes the offensive behavior and submit it to Sony’s moderation team for review. Sony said in 2020 that it is recording all Playstation voice chats on a 5-minute rolling basis. Roblox also informed users earlier this year that it is recording voice chats and maintains the recordings for seven days unless there is a complaint filed. Riot Games began recording voice chats in its Valorant title in July 2022 to better monitor the communication channel for toxic behavior and to investigate reported incidents. Now fonts are at the beck and call of us all, thanks to PCs and word processing. Helvetica, Gill Sans and Johnston Sans are the backdrop of our lives, on traffic signs, logos and name plates of underground stations. Their names are so intriguing – anything but Times New Roman, please: Baskerville, Bembo, Bodoni, Garamond are just some of the beautiful ones. The appearance of words on a printed page is easy to take for granted, but it does not take much delving to be captivated by fonts. It is emphatically a book about Type and not about Printing – very little about the craft of the printer, but lots and lots about the art of the type designer and the designer with type, and the effect of their designs on readers and viewers. It’s certainly more accessible than the manuals and textbooks I remember from studying librarianship – though I found them fascinating. This book is an enjoyable exploration of the history and significance of type, and the perfect gift for a curious reading addict. It is so hard to describe the effect it has – how it is always possible to tell if it works or not. It was a classic example of the subliminal influence of type. It looked absolutely vile next to the airy, clean lines of the well-loved BBC logo (in Gill Sans). It formed part of the word Proms (the other lower case letters weren’t much better), in our face, displayed all over the Royal Albert Hall as their new logo. It was a nasty, curly, tasteless, bloated thing, with a flashy exaggerated serif at the foot and a meaningless blob where the body should have been enclosed. This book was a Christmas present from a friend who was inspired to give it to me after a deeply sympathetic conversation we’d had last summer about our shared hatred for a gigantic capital P. Google Drive is one of the most popular cloud storage services that you can save documents, images, videos, archives, and other files to its cloud. So we'll read along the table row for 12 feet of supported length. Dividing by two gives us 12 feet of supported length. In the case of our example house, the house is 24 feet wide so the house will require a total width of 24 feet of joists. The supported length shown along the left-most side of the table, is the total length of the floor joists to be supported on either side of the floor beam divided by two. A 3-ply with 2 X 10s would mean that three 2 X 10s are joined together side by side with their wide sections running parallel to one another. It also shows the maximum that the beam can span for various numbers of such pieces of lumber built together (this is indicated by 3-ply, 4-ply and 5-ply). This span table excerpt shows two possible sizes of built-up floor beams (2 X 10 and 2 X 12). This table is simply a sample and may not be valid for your region. There are several beam span tables for all the species of wood. The table below shows an excerpt from a maximum span for built-up Douglas fir floor beams table for supporting not more than one floor. There are many beam span tables for all the different lumber species and also for the number of floors that are ultimately supported by this beam. The question now is how big does that center floor beam need to be? Once again, it is not necessary to do tricky wood beam calculations but rather, simply look up the answer in a beam span table. The picture below shows what the framing for this floor would look like in a three-dimensional perspective. The floor joists are still 12' long but now you can see a floor beam running horizontally across the middle of the house (supported by the lower concrete foundation wall). See the picture below for a plan view of how this will look. So we will have to place wood floor beams (or likewise, wood ceiling beams) across the width of the house to support the floor joists. Now at 24 feet, we are beyond the span capabilities of our table in our previous example. It would be possible to still frame the floor in the same way as above but just run the floor joists in the opposite direction (looking for a lumber size to span 13') but for our example, we are going to keep the floor joists running in the same direction. So the house dimensions will now be 24' X 13'. Let's expand our house beyond that 17'2" span capability to 24 feet wide. The widest span in the floor joist span table in Part 2 of this tutorial module showed that floor joists can span 17'2" if they are 2 X 12s spaced 12" o.c. For now, we'll look into supporting the floor joists with a floor joist beam. The wall could be either a properly sized structural concrete or concrete block wall or a wood framed wall. This support could take the form of a structural wall. Once we go beyond the allowable spans for floor joists (as shown in the floor joist span tables), we will need some kind of support under these floor joists. Using Floor Beam Span TablesĬontinuing on from Part 2: Wood Joist Span Tables of Residential Structural Design, we were just about to make our example house wider. Or see our Design Your Own House tutorial site map. Or even go back as far as the residential structural design page which explains basic house structure. If you are just starting out, you might want to go to the joist page since we will expand on the house design example introduced there. This site also has information on learning how to read joist tables and a joist calculator. You'll find a beam span calculator towards the bottom of this page. On this page we will explain how to read and design with floor beam span tables. Designing with Floor Beam Span Tables Part 3 of Residential Structural Design |
